SBEC I + SBEC II = Dual SBEC's

For an ECM, Chrysler began using the Single Board Engine Controller (a.k.a. SBEC I) in 1990 and offered in on Turbo I configurations through 1992. When converting a Gen-2 van, acquiring the right SBEC is a priority. But which Turbo SBEC?  The 1990-91 Turbo SBECs or the very hard to find 1992 Dodge Daytona SBEC. For technical reasons the 1992 unit would be the better choice for a post-92-and up Gen-2, but they are impossible to find and no one offers re-calibrated 92 Turbo SBECs. The solution? Simply run dual SBECs. (Thanks, Dave, great idea!)

I use the 90-91 Turbo SBEC for all vital Engine Control Management (ECM), while the original 93 TBI SBEC is retained and used as a VSS (vehicle speed sensor) to CCD-Bus speedometer driver. While the arrangement sounds like a kludge, there's plenty of room to tuck the second SBEC behind the battery and no one knows the difference. As the "backup" SBEC is not required to control fuel injectors, the electronics run relatively cool. Using the original TBI SBEC is also necessary if you choose to accommodate the 93's original Speed Control system.

The following table shows the SBEC pin outs from 1990 to 1992 for the Turbo I. Also shown is the rare 1993 Flexible Fuel (FF) SMPI and the common garden-variety 1993 TBI SBEC.  Note:  the FF SMPI is interesting to study, as it shares the 90-91 Turbo's SMPI wiring but with the 93 body changes. But the FF SBEC's are rare and their fuel delivery tables would need to be re-programmed for Turbo duty. Chrysler circuit designations and abbreviations are followed.

Major changes in 1992 included moving ASD (Auto Shutdown) pin 8 in (90-91) to pin 57 in 92-up. Also a electronically driven speedometer was driven over the CCD Bus and the speed control switchgear was simplified. 

Speed Control MODE Switches in 1990-91 occupied SBEC pins 48, 49, 50. In 1992 & up Speed Controls (SC) were simplified to only use SBEC pin 23 for Mode Switching. Mopar simply added three voltage-dropping resistors within the wheel-mounted speed control switch assembly, permitting the 93 SBEC to sense SET or RESUME (Decel or Accel) or a single wire by voltage changes. Speed Control output solenoid servo control SBEC pins 33 and 53 remained unchanged. The actual speed control servos appear to be interchangeable.

The intake manifold Charge Air Temperature sensor signal used on factory intercooled SBEC;s (Turbo II, Turbo III, and Turbo IV) is also shown on pin 21, (normally not wired or used on on the stock Turbo I SBEC). Note: The Charge Air Temp sensor is grouded, along with other sensors at SBEC pin 4; or, K4 Sensor Return Ground.
